PharmaCipher: Clinical Pharmacology Detective Puzzle Game

PharmaCipher supports pharmacology learning through structured, clue-based practice, helping learners connect clinical context, mechanisms, class features, safety considerations, and drug identity.

Educational Purpose

PharmaCipher invites learners to reason from clues rather than recall isolated facts. It encourages meaningful links between a clinical vignette, pharmacological mechanism, safety issue, and drug identity.

The app is part of the PharmaNUS collection of free pharmacology learning webapps, which are developed and updated in response to learner feedback for students and medical and health professions learners.

What Learners Practise

  • Clinical clue interpretation
  • Drug mechanisms, class features, adverse effects, and safety considerations
  • Reasoning from patient context to likely medicine identity
  • Integrated pharmacology recall rather than isolated fact recall

How To Play

  1. Open a clue-based case or puzzle.
  2. Read the clinical and pharmacological clues.
  3. Infer the drug, drug class, or safety issue being signalled.
  4. Submit your answer and review the feedback.
  5. Use each round to practise connecting mechanism, context, and medicine identity.

Use In Teaching

PharmaCipher can be used as a short independent practice activity, a warm-up before class, a revision task after teaching, or a prompt for small-group discussion. It works best when paired with debriefing, explanation, and connection back to core pharmacology concepts.
